character design

Hobb! Hobb is by far my favorite character. Old men in general are fun subjects, with all their wrinkles, quirks and such. Hobb started as an assignment for my character sculpting class. We were required to write a character sheet, separate head and full-body turn- arounds, head sculpture and full body sculpture.

The image to the left left is the first concept sketch where I tried to find the character that became Hobb o’ the Woods. To the right shows when I decided that Hobb ought to have some sort of sidekick, and a sarcastic owl (like Archimedes in Disney’s Sword in the Stone).

These character sculpts of Hobb and Hoot are made of a wire and tinfoil armature covered in flesh colored Super Sculpey. I used craft acrylics to paint the sculptures. To preserve the translucent skin quality of the clay I used powdered chalk pastels (applied like makeup) to tint it rather than paint it.  The head sculpt is about 4 inches tall and the full sculpt is about 8 inches.
